1. What is IDN?

IDN stands for Internationalized Domain Names, also called the Domain Name Multi-Language other than ASCII characters.

In Malaysia, the Internationalized Domain Names to be launched is in Jawi , Chinese , and Tamil characters which means Malaysia.

2. What type of IDN will be supported by .my DOMAIN REGISTRY?

.my DOMAIN REGISTRY will support 3 characters of IDN, which are Jawi, Chinese and Tamil. Started with Jawi script in January 2011 and followed by Chinese and Tamil characters by end of this year (2011).

3. What is the difference between IDN and ASCII domain names?

ASCII name of the domain name is used by most Internet users, by using characters consist of Latin characters (A-Z, a-z,0-9, and -) for example domainregistry.my. Meanwhile IDN domain name is the domain name consists of various characters such as Jawi , Chinese , and Tamil .

4. How many stages of IDN will be launched?

The stages of IDN will be as follows:

Milestone Duration Remarks
Phase 1 (Jawi):
Application is only open to government agencies and government educational entities.		 9am, 24 January 2011 –
5pm, 30 April 2011		 Submit via .my DOMAIN REGISTRY.
Phase 2 (Jawi):
Application is only open to existing .my customers.		 9am, 01 June 2011 –
5pm, 31 August 2011		 Submit via .my DOMAIN REGISTRY. Acceptance of applications from existing .my domain registrants on first-come-first-served basis.
Phase 3 (Jawi, Chinese & Tamil):
Application is only open to existing .my customers.		 9am, 20 Sept 2011 –
5ptg, 30 Nov 2011		 Submit via .my DOMAIN REGISTRY. Acceptance of applications from existing .my domain registrants on first-come- first-served basis.
Phase 4 (Jawi, Chinese & Tamil):
Application open for public.		 To be confirmed in December 2011. Submit via .my DOMAIN REGISTRY. Acceptance of applications from public on first-come- first-served basis.

5. When is the launch date for IDN in Chinese and Tamil will be announced?

The IDN launching in all three characters Jawi, Chinese and Tamil will be announced by end of this year. Please refer to our website for latest updates.

6. How will IDN be shown on the WHOIS system?

If you need information to know about your requested IDN, kindly visit the WHOIS service.

WHOIS only accepts ASCII characters. You can press the link shown in the WHOIS service to view the name of your IDN punycode and the system will display all information on the required domain name in native and punycode characters.

There is a difference in WHOIS for IDN in Chinese characters, which is, if the user enters an IDN that has a string variant, WHOIS service will display all relevant information as an example:
