11 January 2006
Dear Valued Customers,
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and
Malaysian Network Information Centre (MYNIC) have released a Public Consultation Report
on the Reintroduction of Second Level (2LD) '.my' Domain Name Space by MYNIC, Malaysia's
designated country code top level domain (ccTLD) manager.
Registrations of 2LD '.my' domain names were initially allowed in line with international
practice relating to the registration of domain names. However, in the late 1990s, there
was a trend towards categorising domain names into activity segments, such as commercial,
network, government, education, which led to the popularity of the third-level domain name
format for ccTLD operators. This led to the creation of third level (3LD) '.my' domain
names as currently offered by MYNIC.
Since then MYNIC has received requests from both local and international consumers for shorter and easier to remember ".my'' domain names. The 2LDs, which are shorter and briefer than third-level domain names, will be easier to remember and hopefully generate more online activity.
MCMC and MYNIC have conducted a public consultation from 25 May to 24 June 2005 for a
total of 31 days aimed at gathering public feedback.
MCMC and MYNIC have considered the feedback of the first public consultation and is now
seeking views on the revised plan of 2LD '.my'
The Public Consultation Report On “Reintroducing 2nd Level ‘.my’ Domain Name Space"
is available at www.mcmc.gov.my and
www.mynic.net.my. The proposed reintroduction of
public registration 2LDs is to provide more choices to the public. The outcome of this
public consultation process will have significant implications for consumers. Therefore we invite comments from members of the public and the industry on the revised
plan set out in the public consultation report. Submission period is until 5pm Friday
10 February 2006 and can be e-mailed to
2LD-comments@mynic.net.my.
